Kanex D type (metal fire) extinguisher
Burning metals such as magnesium, aluminium powder, titanium, sodium and lithium react violently with water and ordinary powders. A D type extinguisher uses a special powder, sodium chloride or ternary eutectic chloride (TEC), that forms a crust over the burning metal and cuts off air. Kanex D type models discharge gently through a long applicator so the powder does not scatter the burning metal.
