Types of fire hose nozzles
- Short branch pipe: the basic smooth-bore jet nozzle on a 63 mm hose, used in hose boxes and by fire brigades. Bhavi, Armorfire, AAAG, NewAge and SafePro offer it in gunmetal, stainless steel or aluminium; Essel offers an SS branch pipe with nozzle.
- Triple purpose nozzle: lets the operator switch between jet, spray and shut-off at the nozzle. Bhavi (SS-304), Armorfire and NewAge offer it.
- Revolving and jumbo curtain nozzles: Armorfire offers a revolving nozzle for basements and cable trenches and a jumbo curtain nozzle, both with a 63 mm inlet.
- Pistol grip fog nozzle: the NewAge SuperFire nozzle has a ball valve shut-off and goes from straight jet to wide fog, 475 LPM on a 63 mm inlet (maker's rating).
- Hose reel nozzles: Armorfire offers PVC, brass and SS shut-off nozzles in 20 mm and 25 mm for hose reel drums.
- Water curtain and MVWS nozzles: Armorfire open nozzles for deluge lines, in SS304 and brass, 15 mm and 20 mm.
How to choose a nozzle or branch pipe
- Inlet size: hydrant nozzles here have a 63 mm instantaneous inlet; hose reel nozzles are 20 mm or 25 mm. Match the nozzle to the hose.
- Jet or spray: a short branch pipe gives a strong jet with a long throw. A triple purpose or fog nozzle adds a spray to cool and protect the operator and a shut-off to save water.
- Material: aluminium is light and lower in cost; gunmetal is heavy and long-lasting; stainless steel resists rust.
- Where it is used: short branch pipes in every hose box; triple purpose and fog nozzles where trained teams respond; revolving nozzles in basements and trenches.
