Types of sprinkler fittings
- Wet alarm valve: fitted vertically on the sprinkler riser. When a head opens and water starts to flow, the valve lifts and sends water to the alarm gong or pressure switch. Safex FAVB comes in 100 mm (FAVB 100R) and 150 mm (FAVB 150R), with flanged ends and a working pressure up to 175 psi (maker's rating).
- Flexible sprinkler drop: a stainless steel flexible pipe between the branch line and a pendent head in a false ceiling. Safex offers braided and unbraided drops in 1000 mm and 1500 mm. Armorfire offers braided and unbraided drops in 700, 1000, 1200, 1500 and 1800 mm with mounting accessories.
- Flexible sprinkler hose: Tyco FH-1, braided and unbraided, for wet, dry and pre-action systems.
- Water curtain and spray nozzles: open nozzles for deluge systems. Armorfire offers SS304 curtain spray nozzles in 15 mm and 20 mm, a stainless steel water curtain nozzle and a forged brass 15 mm medium velocity water spray (MVWS) nozzle.
How to choose sprinkler fittings
- Alarm valve size: pick 100 mm or 150 mm to match the riser size in your sprinkler design.
- Drop length: measure from the branch line to the ceiling tile. Take the next longer length so the drop is not stretched.
- Braided or unbraided: braided drops have an outer wire braid that protects the corrugated pipe from damage during fixing. Unbraided drops are lighter and lower in cost.
- Curtain or MVWS nozzle: curtain nozzles make a sheet of water to stop fire and heat spreading across an opening. MVWS nozzles spray to cool transformers, tanks and cable areas.
For the heads themselves, see fire sprinklers. For isolation valves on the riser, see butterfly and sluice valves.
