Types of fire sprinklers

A sprinkler head is chosen by how it is mounted and how fast it responds. This range covers glass bulb sprinklers for wet systems.

  • Pendent sprinkler: hangs down from the pipe below the ceiling or through a false ceiling. The most common head in offices, malls and hospitals.
  • Upright sprinkler: points up from pipes that run below the roof, for warehouses, parking and plant rooms with no false ceiling.
  • Sidewall sprinkler: fixed on a wall and throws water across a room, for corridors, hotel rooms and small rooms where ceiling pipes are hard to run. Tyco TY-B is offered as a horizontal sidewall head.
  • Concealed sprinkler: sits behind a flat cover plate that drops away in a fire, for a clean ceiling. Tyco RFII comes with white or chrome cover plates (59°C release), and Safex offers a concealed head with cover plate.
  • Quick response sprinkler: a thinner bulb opens sooner than a standard response head. Tyco TY-FRB and an Armorfire pendent with a 3 mm bulb are quick response types.

How to choose a sprinkler head

  • Temperature rating: the bulb colour shows the rating. This range has 57°C, 68°C and 79°C heads (maker's rating). 68°C is the most common for normal rooms; a higher rating suits warmer spaces.
  • Size and K factor: 1/2 inch (15 mm) K80 is the usual size. Tyco TY-B also comes in 3/4 inch K115, and Armorfire in 15 mm and 20 mm.
  • Thread: Armorfire heads come with BSP or BSPT thread. Match the thread to your fittings.
  • Connection in a false ceiling: use a flexible drop instead of rigid pipe. Safex drops come in 1000 mm and 1500 mm, Armorfire drops from 700 mm to 1800 mm with mounting accessories, and Tyco FH-1 hoses braided or unbraided.

Spacing and the number of heads depend on the room and the hazard, so share your layout with your consultant or with us. See also sprinkler fittings such as alarm valves.

Ask on WhatsApp
How does a fire sprinkler work?

Each head has a glass bulb filled with liquid. When the heat at the ceiling reaches the bulb rating, the bulb breaks and only that head opens to spray water on the fire below.

What is the difference between pendent and upright sprinklers?

A pendent sprinkler hangs down from the pipe, usually through a false ceiling. An upright sprinkler points up from pipes below an open roof, as in warehouses and parking.

What does 68°C mean on a sprinkler?

It is the temperature at which the bulb is made to break (maker's rating). 68°C heads, usually with a red bulb, are the common choice for normal rooms.

What is a quick response sprinkler?

It has a thinner bulb that reacts faster to heat, so it opens sooner than a standard response head. Tyco TY-FRB is a quick response sprinkler in this range.

Why use a flexible sprinkler drop?

A flexible drop connects the branch pipe to a head in a false ceiling without cutting rigid pipe to exact length, which makes fixing and later changes quicker.

Are sprinkler prices on this page final?

No. Each product shows a starting price as a guide, before GST. The final price comes with your quote and depends on options and quantity.
