Types of modular fire extinguishers
A modular fire extinguisher is a sealed, pressurised unit fixed above the risk. A heat-sensing glass bulb bursts when the room gets hot, and the unit discharges over the area below without anyone pulling a pin. The range here differs by agent and size.
- ABC powder modular: for general stores, godowns, DB rooms and machine rooms. Safex offers MAP 50 in 2, 5 and 10 kg; SafePro offers 2, 5, 10 and 15 kg in an MS or SS body; Kanex offers MAP 50 or MAP 90 in 2, 5, 10 and 15 kg; Ceasefire offers MAP 90 in 5 and 10 kg.
- Clean agent modular: no residue, for server rooms, UPS rooms, panels and record rooms. Safex makes 2, 5 and 10 kg; SafePro makes 2, 5, 10, 15 and 60 kg; Kanex offers FE-36 or HFC-236fa; Ceasefire offers HCFC 123 in 5 and 10 kg.
- Panel and cabinet suppression: the Ceasefire Mini-Micro unit, in Adaptive and Intuitive types, is a small self-activating unit placed in or on an electrical panel, server rack or cabinet to put out a fire inside it.
How to choose a modular fire extinguisher
- Agent: ABC powder for stores, godowns and DB rooms where a little residue is acceptable; clean agent where electronics or papers must stay undamaged.
- Size and coverage: the area one unit covers depends on its size and mounting height, as given by the maker. Small rooms may need one 5 kg unit; larger rooms need several units or a bigger size. Send your room size and ceiling height for a suggestion.
- Body: SS body for damp or corrosive areas, MS body for general use.
- Keep portable units too: modular units protect a room when it is empty; staff still need portable clean agent or ABC fire extinguishers near the door. Pair the room with smoke detectors for early warning.
