Types of smoke detectors
- Addressable smoke detectors: each has its own address on the panel loop. On this page: Hochiki ESP optical, Eaton CAP320 optical and CAPT340 photo thermal, Morley HM-PSE-AP and HM-PSE-S2-I (with isolator) and HM-PTSE-AP photo thermal, Notifier FSP-951 photoelectric and FSV-951R laser, Simplex 4098-9714 photoelectric and 4098-9754 multi-sensor, GST DI-9102E photoelectric and DI-9101E heat and smoke (supplied with base), and the Ravel analogue addressable detector.
- Conventional smoke detectors: for zone panels. Hochiki SLR-E3N photoelectric (with a marine version), Eaton CPD321 optical and FXN922 multi-sensor, and Ravel RE-326-2SL and RE-316 S2L.
- Intrinsically safe smoke detectors: Hochiki photoelectric smoke detectors for areas with flammable gas or dust, in white or ivory.
- Standalone battery smoke detectors: Ceasefire 1L, 1LE and DT dual sensor (9 V battery, 85 dB alarm as the maker's rating), Eaton NUG35940 with a 5 year lithium battery, and Impact JTYJ-GD-2330-B. These need no wiring or panel.
How to choose a smoke detector
- Panel or no panel: if the building has a fire alarm panel, pick a detector of the same brand and type (addressable or conventional). For a flat, home or small shop with no panel, a battery smoke detector is the simple choice.
- Optical or multi-sensor: optical detectors suit offices, bedrooms and corridors. Multi-sensor detectors that also sense heat cut false alarms in areas with some dust or steam.
- Very early warning: laser smoke detectors such as the Notifier FSV-951R suit server rooms and clean rooms.
- Do not fit smoke detectors in kitchens or boiler rooms: use heat detectors there. For tall open halls, see beam detectors.
- Base: most panel detectors need a mounting base of the same brand; the GST detectors come with one.
