Types of fire pump accessories
- Foot valve: fitted at the end of the suction pipe in the tank, with a strainer, to keep the pump primed and stop debris. Kartar offers a ductile iron ball type foot valve; Normex the B-05(N) ball type flanged foot valve from 50 mm to 300 mm.
- Air valve: lets trapped air out so air locks do not cut the flow. Kartar offers a ductile iron single chamber air valve; Zoloto screwed air release valves in 15, 20 and 25 mm.
- Safety relief valve: Zoloto bronze spring loaded, open discharge valves from 15 mm to 50 mm, with set pressure up to 10 kg/cm² (maker's rating), to release excess pressure.
- Rubber bellow (expansion joint): flanged, 50 mm to 300 mm, fitted next to the pump to absorb vibration, movement and small misalignment.
- Special MS pump flange: drilled to match the pump outlet, 32 mm to 150 mm, ordered by PCD (pitch circle diameter).
- Pump room fittings: MS buttweld elbows (C class heavy, 25 mm to 200 mm), concentric and eccentric reducers, and socketweld elbows, tees and couplings from 15 mm to 50 mm.
How to choose pump accessories
- Size: foot valves, bellows and flanges go by the suction or delivery pipe size. Pump flanges go by the pump outlet size and its PCD, so measure the bolt circle on the pump.
- Suction side: a foot valve with strainer at the inlet, and an eccentric reducer flat side up where the pipe size changes, help avoid air pockets.
- Delivery side: a rubber bellow to take vibration, then a non return valve and an isolation valve.
- Relief and air: fit a relief valve where pressure can build up, and air valves at the high points of the main.
