Types of valves for fire water lines
- Isolation valves: butterfly valves PN16 from 50 mm to 300 mm (Kartar, Normex, Zoloto 1078A, and Armorfire lever or gear operated); cast iron sluice valves PN16 with rising or non rising spindle (Kartar, Zoloto 1079D and 1079B); Kartar ductile iron resilient seated gate valves K511 and K511 R up to 400 mm; and Zoloto bronze gate valves from 15 mm to 100 mm.
- Non return valves (NRV): stop backflow on pump delivery lines. Flanged cast iron swing NRVs (Kartar, Zoloto), Normex ball type NRVs, wafer check valves (Kartar, Normex, Armorfire) and dual plate check valves (Kartar, Zoloto 1082).
- Ball valves: quarter-turn shut-off. Zoloto brass from 8 mm to 50 mm, Armorfire stainless steel from 10 mm to 50 mm, Kartar cast iron 40 mm and 50 mm.
- Pump suction and line care: foot valves (Kartar, Normex B-05(N)), Kartar Y-strainers in cast iron and ductile iron, and air release valves (Kartar, Zoloto, AAAG 25 NB, NewAge).
- Sprinkler and hydrant parts: the Safex FAVB wet alarm valve (100 mm and 150 mm), Armorfire 63 mm spare NRVs for hydrant outlets and hose reel drum valves.
- Steam and pressure control: Zoloto pressure reducing valves, safety relief valves, globe steam stop valves and a 15 mm thermodynamic steam trap for utility lines.
How to choose a valve
- Job: isolate (butterfly, sluice, gate, ball), stop backflow (NRV, dual plate), protect the pump (foot valve, strainer) or remove air (air release valve).
- Size and ends: match the pipe size. Large lines use flanged or wafer valves; small lines use screwed valves.
- Pressure class: many valves here are PN16 (maker's rating). Check the rating against your system pressure.
- Space: wafer and dual plate valves are short and light; sluice and swing NRVs are longer but common on fire mains.
