What fire hydrant fittings include
A fire hydrant system carries water from the fire tank and pump to hydrant points in and around a building. Each part of that line has its own fitting, and this page brings them together.
- Landing valves: the valve at each hydrant point where the hose is connected, single or double outlet, in gunmetal or stainless steel. See landing valves.
- Fire hose and couplings: 63 mm RRL and other delivery hoses with instantaneous couplings, plus hose boxes to store them.
- Branch pipes and nozzles: short branch pipes, triple purpose, revolving and curtain nozzles that aim the water.
- Hose reels: fire hose reel drums with 20 mm or 25 mm hose for first aid firefighting by staff.
- Fire brigade inlets and breechings: let fire engines pump water into the system, or split and join hose lines.
- Stand posts and monitors: for external yard hydrants and large open risks.
- Sprinklers and sprinkler fittings: glass bulb heads, flexible drops and alarm valves.
- Valves, pump room parts and pipe fittings: butterfly, sluice and non return valves, foot valves, air valves, flanges, elbows and gaskets.
How to choose fire hydrant fittings
- Size: most hose-side parts (landing valve outlets, couplings, branch pipes, hoses) are 63 mm. Valves and pipe fittings on the main line go by the pipe size, usually 50 mm to 300 mm.
- Material: gunmetal is the traditional choice for valves and couplings. Stainless steel (commercial SS, SS-202 or SS-304) resists corrosion. Aluminium is lighter and lower in cost for branch pipes and couplings.
- Where it is used: internal hydrants in buildings use landing valves, hoses and hose boxes on each floor. Factories and campuses add yard stand posts, monitors and fire brigade inlets.
- Match the parts: keep the coupling type and size the same across valves, hoses and branch pipes so they connect on the day.
